Do You Have a "Bucket List"?
3 surefire tips to get started...before you're ready to kitck it
by Phyllis May

Do you have a “Bucket List”? What is a “bucket list”?

In the newly released film, Carter (Freeman) explains it as a list of things to accomplish before you “kick the bucket”. Carter and Joe (Nicholson) share a room in a hospital and both find that they only have months to live. When Carter shares his “bucket list” theory, Joe’s resources make it happen. While their adventures involved travel and expense, many things on the list had no cost…such as witness something majestic or laugh until you cry.

What about you? Why wait until you’re ready to kick the bucket? Whatever you call it, everyone should start a “bucket list” and it’s never too early to list your dreams and goals. However, for the 72 million baby boomers beginning to retire, it’s a perfect opportunity to kick-start the list. Call it a “bucket list” or a “life resumé”, as refirement consultant, Phyllis May, refers to it. If you like, create your own name for it…but whatever you call it, begin your list now.

Can’t get started? May suggests the following tips (although she cautions that some might be hard to follow):

  1. Don’t be afraid to be selfish or self-centered. Most of our adult life, we’ve made decisions that centered around others…spouse, children, pets, parents, job or other commitments. When Carter explains that he was married young and has worked hard all of his life to support his family, he vehemently concludes with, “I believe I have earned the right to make a decision that involves me”. For many, making self-centered decision will be one of the hardest things to do in retirement years.

  2. Make your list without thinking of how much it will cost or how it will be accomplished. Don’t’ forget to include the daring “skydiving” type of wish, as well as the “laughter of a baby” type…appreciation of the simple things.

  3. Let go of your self-limiting beliefs. “It’s a list”, says May, “but a list can be the beginning of reality.” Nothing will happen if you don’t make it part of a plan. What seems impossible today could be crossed off as completed someday. If it never happens, it’s been fun to think about.

As you write many items on your list, you might think “when hell freezes over” as you write it. May responds, “It recently snowed in Baghdad for the first time in over 100 years.”

So anything is possible but nothing happens until you start. It’s only a list…but won’t it be fun to check things off?
